Which one should I pick?
- Your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked → eSIM. Install it at home on Wi-Fi, switch data to it after landing, keep your home line on for calls/SMS.
- No eSIM support → USIM. Collect it at the airport telecom counters or have it delivered; keep your home SIM somewhere safe.
- Family or group, laptop and tablet too → pocket Wi-Fi, but everyone must stay close to the device.
- You need to receive Korean SMS codes (e.g. some restaurant or taxi apps) → a plan with a Korean number. It still won’t pass full Korean identity verification — see apps without a Korean number.
Before you buy: checklist
- Check your phone is carrier-unlocked and (for eSIM) supports eSIM — look in your phone’s settings or ask your carrier.
- Check the plan: days, data amount or speed limit after a cap, and whether it includes a Korean number.
- Keep your home SIM reachable if your bank sends one-time codes by SMS (dual SIM).
- Pocket Wi-Fi: note the pickup counter, return place and deadline, and bring a power bank.

Yes. Messaging apps stay linked to your account, not to the data SIM, so they keep working over the Korean data connection.
Does a tourist SIM with a Korean number pass identity verification (본인인증)?
Generally no. Korean identity verification needs a line registered in your own name with Korean ID. A Korean number helps with simple SMS codes only.
Is free Wi-Fi enough?
Cafés, subway stations and many public places have free Wi-Fi, but you’ll want data on the street for maps and taxi apps, so most travellers get an eSIM, SIM or pocket Wi-Fi.
